I am an army veteran with something to say.  I’m not an academic, so you won’t find many footnotes in what I write.  You’ll probably even come across some typos.  When I reference something directly, I’ll point you to where I’m coming from–what’s motivating me to write– but for the most part I am writing about my experiences and broadening this discussion to something more than what you would get between two friends, two strangers, or a guest on a television show talking to the host.  No one should ever feel like they have to censor themselves when those arguments are well-intentioned, honest, and most importantly sound with regard to this country’s history.

Since I started this about six months ago, I’ve received “thank yous” from friends that have always been apprehensive in voicing their opinions or concerns when these subjects get brought up.  Their choices usually come down to something like a.) say nothing b.) pretend they agree or c.) say something and immediately get labeled a racist, or a bigot.  I can’t blame anyone for not choosing “C”, but I’ll use this space to write from a perspective that can help them feel like they aren’t alone– that they finally have a voice.
